Objectives:
- Students will use inferential statistics.
- Students will use a spreadsheet software program to organize data, enter formulas to perform calculations for stock investment and gain/loss, central tendencies, standard deviation and z-scores.
- Students will use a spreadsheet to graphically show the data.
- Students will use a web log (blog) to post their observations through the 14 week period.
Time Required: Two 45 minute classes (Long term project will require 14 weeks of work on their own using local stocks.)
Pre-Requisite Skills: Prior knowledge of Central Tendencies, Standard Deviation and z-score calculations.
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools):
- Computer
- Spreadsheet Software (sample Excel file)
- Internet
Procedure:
<< Day 1 >>
1. Start class by reviewing central tendencies, standard deviation and z-scores.
2. Students will have data from the local stocks for several years. They will determine which stock(s) they would like to purchase. They will be given a $10,000 limit.
3. Take the students to the computer lab to show them how to put their data in the spread sheet program and create the formulas for stock investments and gain/loss.
4. Students will have the opportunity to sell/buy stock during the 14 week period.
<<Day 2 - after 14 weeks>>
5. Take students to the computer lab to enter data from the whole class. Including formulas for Central tendencies, standard deviation and z-scores.
6. Students will create a graph in the spread sheet to display visually what they have descerned from the unit. (Stocks, Central tendencies, standarad deviation or z-scores)
Differentiated Instruction:
More technologically advanced students can help other students.
21st Century Assessment/Evaluation:
Successful completion of spreadsheet of data with formulas and graphical display of data and Blog entries.
