Objectives:
- Students will use proportions in real life situation.
- Students will use a spreadsheet software program to organize data, enter a formula to perform the calculation for the scale model.
- Students will use Google Sketch Up to create a 3-D plan. (advanced students)
- Students will create a 3-D model. (Long term project)
Time Required: Two 45 minute classes (Long term project will require two weeks of work on their own.)
Pre-Requisite Skills: Be able to solve Proportions
21st Century Tools (Technology Tools):
- Computer
- Spreadsheet Software (Sample Excel file for teachers)
- Google Sketch Up (Advanced Students)
Procedure:
1. Start class by reviewing proportions. We are going to use this in real life today.
2. Students will have data measurements available from their own bedrooms of furniture and walls, etc. Students will decide on a scale to use for conversion of their data.
3. Take the students to the computer lab to show them how to put their data in the spread sheet program and create the formula for conversion. Also, show them how easy it is to change the formula if they decide to change the size of their 3-D model.
<<Advanced Students>>
4. Advanced Students can help other students with step #3 above.
5. Take students to the computer lab to show them how to use Google Sketch Up.
6. Students will create a basic 3-D drawing of their bedroom in Google Sketch Up.
Differentiated Instruction:
More advanced students can use Google Sketch Up and peer tutor classmates.
21st Century Assessment/Evaluation:
Successful completion of spreadsheet of data with conversions for 3-D model of their bedroom.
Create a Rubric for this lesson.
Successful completeion of a basic Google Sketch Up of their bedroom for advanced students.
